Members

The Lake County Planning Commission consists of the five (5) members of the Lake County Board of County Commissioners. The term of each member of the Planning Commission coincides with the respective County Commissioner terms. County zoning officials may be appointed as ex-officio members of the Planning Commission.

Meetings

The Planning Commission meets at such times as may be necessary to accomplish the purposes of their duties, but in no event shall they meet less than once every 3 months. Typically, the Planning Commission meetings are held in the Commission Room on regular County Commission meeting days, which take place on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. All meetings of the Planning Commission are open to the public and conducted in accordance with the rules established by the Planning Commission.

Duties

1. Comprehensive Plan: The Planning Commission may prepare, or cause to be prepared, a comprehensive plan for the county, including those municipalities within the county which are unincorporated or which have requested by resolution of the governing board of such municipality be included. Upon preparation the Planning Commission shall make recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners subject to SDCL 11-2-18.

2. Zoning Ordinance: To develop and recommend a zoning ordinance, in accordance with the Plan, for the regulation of the height, area, bulk, location, and use of private and public structures and premises, and of population density as may be provided by SDCL 11-2-13 and 11-2-14. Upon preparation, the Planning Commission shall make recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners subject to SDCL 11-2-18.

3. Subdivision (AKA Plats):
a. To develop and recommend regulations governing the subdivision of land within Lake County.
b. To review proposals for subdivision to determine whether such subdivisions comply with the subdivision ordinance of Lake County and make recommendation to the Board of County Commissioners relating to the approval of subdivisions.

4. Amendments:
The Planning Commission may from time to time propose and make recommendation on amendments to the comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, and subdivision regulations subject to SDCL 11-2-28.

5. Any other duties as outlined in the Zoning Ordinance.

Please contact the Zoning Officer for what the Application Deadline all refers to (ie, a review period may be required to meet the deadline). A complete application means that all fees have been paid, taxes paid (if applicable), all required information provided, and any additional information requested by the Zoning Officer needed to make a determination as to whether the request complies with the subdivision and/or zoning ordinance.

Tax Assessment Freeze Program Deadline
Sunday, March 1, 2026

Elderly and disabled South Dakotans have until April 1 to apply for property tax relief under South Dakota's Assessment Freeze for the Elderly and Disabled Program. Applications are available at the local treasurer offices and on the Department of Revenue's website.

PUBLIC SNOW REMOVAL NOTICE

NOTICE: An individual who plows snow from a driveway onto a public road, or plows snow from a driveway across a public road piling it in the ditch, may be in violation of a SD law that prohibits dumping on or within highway right-of-ways. Intentional dumping on a highway right-of-way is a Class 1 misdemeanor. This may also be a violation of a SD law that prohibits the destruction of a highway grade or ditch, which is a Class 2 misdemeanor.
